According to the BBC, Red Bull’s engine supply this year will be re-badged as Infiniti instead of Renault. On the surface, it’s no leap of branding as Renault owns roughly 44% of Nissan and the Japanese company has decided its premium brand could use some global appeal. This move, the BBC estimate, will save Red Bull approximately 8M Euros a year as the engine supply is suggested to be provided for free. The formal announcement is expected at the Geneva Motor Show on Tuesday and this will mean that Red Bull will now be on a more level playing field with nearly 4-5% of their annual budget being freed up to spend elsewhere. It’s a cunning move on Red Bull’s part and it is unclear as to if Renault or Nissan are planning a financial program for the Austrian team beyond an engine supply but there could be worst options as Red Bull is the current champion in F1 and looks to be the odds-on favorite for 2011 as well.
